IEC 61850 Upgrade Cards for transformer monitoring systems

Kalkitech December 25, 2023

Industry: Transformer monitoring / DGA monitoring

Solutions:

Protocol upgrade cards for updating the transformer monitoring equipment to IEC 61850 / DNP3 / IEC104

Business Case:

  • OEMs had legacy protocol interfaces for their transformer monitoring equipment and wanted upgrades to IEC 61850, IEC104 and DNP3.
  • The solution should support a configuration option using their original configuration software using their legacy protocol.
  • DGA system also needed to confirm PRP-based network redundancy requirements.
  • Support single or multiple slave protocols that can be field configurable.

Solution Components:

  • SYNC 221 and 241 were interfaced internally in the transformer monitoring device gathering data on the TTL interface using protocols like Modbus.
  • SYNC2XX modules were used to convert data to IEC 61850 reports using mapping facilities.
  • Could use GPIO based Fast-Message-GOOSE-Bus for sending/receiving time-critical data via GOOSE publisher and subscriber messages.
  • Could use Transparent / Pass-Through functionality within the SYNC 2XX for configuration scenarios using the existing tool and its native protocols.
  • Started using SYNC 261 for dual Ethernet requirements and PRP-based network redundancy requirements in its new model variant of the transformer monitoring device.

Key Benefits:

  • Enabled the OEMs' easy migration to the latest protocols within a month with all the new facilities available in the protocol for detailed monitoring and analysis.
  • Could use choose the protocols based on the customer requirements by just licensing.
  • Made the device complete futuristic concerning protocols and its updating, by just licensing/updating the firmware whenever new versions/protocols would be available in SYNC.
